How to Use Artificial Succulents in Any Space

Succulents are a decorator’s secret weapon. Lush and beautiful, yet versatile enough to put almost anywhere, succulents can quickly liven up your home or office. Thing is, like any exotic plant, they can be notoriously tough to keep alive. Let’s take a look at different kinds of succulents, and how you can keep them looking great.\

Succulents come in all sizes and shapes in nature. From cactus to aloe, they are marvels to behold. They are typically found in arid climates, as their fleshy, thick leaves and roots are remarkably able to trap and store even the smallest amount of moisture. As we mentioned, the fun thing about succulents is their small yet interchangeable quality. You can display many different shapes and colors in the same arrangements. Round presentations let you showcase a larger dramatic species, and surround it with complementary shorter plants. We love the spiky agave rising up in the center flanked with darker green rounder types. Spreading white rocks around the plant bases with a darker planter gives great contrast to highlight the individual species.

You can also work with horizontal planters, which you can place in low profile spaces like a narrow desk or bookcase. Lining up three or four identical plants gives a sleek uniform look, while contrasting sizes and species gives an eclectic feel and definition. Air plants, while not technically succulents, have a similar appearance, and don’t even need soil (though you will need to submerge them occasionally), so they can be hung in glass globes at varying lengths for the vertical effect. And don’t forget the giant variety of cactus that can be used in similar ways…just watch your fingertips! They can add excellent vertical touches in corners and windowsills, and larger species can be accentuated with tall planters to accentuate them.

Maintenance and Care

Succulents can be tricky to keep alive. They need precise amounts of water (they can be damaged by too much or not enough), just the right amount of sunlight, and soil that has optimal drainage. Additionally, placing different species together in the same arrangement (as pictured above) can make it even more challenging, as each plant may have different care needs.
