Happy National Daisy Day

While daisies might seem like a common flower - that doesn’t mean they aren’t special. In fact, they’re so special in their own right that they have their own dedicated National Day which happens to be today - January 28th! To celebrate the honorary day, we’re sharing a few fun facts about this everyday flower.

The word daisy derives from the Old English language “day’s eye” because it’s petals bloom at dawn and close as sunset.

In England, this every day flower is often referred to as bruisewort because its leaves would be crushed for a medicinal remedy to help soothe bruised skin. Pretty and useful, how about that!

While the daisy is part of the Asteraceae family, there are thousand of variations within the family.

Native to western, central, and northern Europe, daisies are now pretty much found everywhere in the Americas and Australia.

Daisies are often referred to as composite flowers; meaning they are flowers within flowers. The yellow disk floret that is iconic for the daisy is actually a collection of smaller florals all clustered together.

Daisies symbolize purity, innocence, simplicity, virtue, and patience, hence why they’re often referred to as the flower of children.

What was originally considered a weed, daisies today are valuable for landscaping purposes.
